#StyleRecipe: 7 On Point Styles For Burning Man
The dreadlocked white neighbor invited me to his garden and pointed to the gigantic metal sculpture he was working on for an outdoor festival in Nevada. It was a man, made out of all of these scrap metal parts. I didn't understand how he was going to transport it to Nevada, but dreadlocked white dude was all in his head about how he didn't have a lot of money, really believed in the power of this sculpture and needed money to finish it. This was 1999 and Burning Man wasn't yet Burning Man. The Mad Max inspired headdresses and costumes would not yet populate my Facebook feed for another ten years. "Burning Man famous" start-up types would not be written up in Forbes for their sartorial successes for another fifteen years.
I've never been to Burning Man. Never yelled, "I'm a Virgin No More" as maiden voyagers do as they roll on the dust for the first time. I haven't summited the different letters of a metal sculpture spelling out the word DREAM or put on a leather bikini (I might own one) and climbed to the center of the beautiful, sensual, and patriotic Spread Eagle sculpture. I suppose I've never been because it always seemed to me that in the desert of Black Rock, your purpose is to self-express, love freely, and be generous without shame. As an artist and communicator I do that everyday so I thought maybe traveling for a week to act like myself seemed redundant.
I realize now how limiting that belief is and that you can never be too self-expressive or kind and free-loving, right? If you have an extra ticket, take me with you? Oh and dreadlocked white dude, if you remember me, reach out. I want to know what ever happened to that beautiful sculpture.
So, alas, if you are going to Burning Man or want to send a gift to your friends going to Burning Man, this is my #StyleRecipe.
